Square Bitcoin Conversions

Turn a controlled share of Square sales into bitcoin—without changing how your business takes everyday payments.

Square Bitcoin Conversions lets an eligible U.S. Square business automatically purchase bitcoin with a chosen percentage of eligible daily sales.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

It is designed for owners who want to build a long-term digital-asset position while keeping checkout inside Square. Square says card payments and Cash App Pay qualify, while cash, checks, Afterpay, gift cards, and deposits do not. You can set up to 50% of daily net card sales, pause or change the setting in Dashboard, and keep, sell, or withdraw the bitcoin later. Bitcoin is volatile and not FDIC- or SIPC-protected, so this is a treasury choice—not a substitute for operating cash or financial advice.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Automate a chosen savings percentage

Set a recurring conversion of up to 50% of eligible daily net card sales, then change or pause it from Square Dashboard when cash needs or business priorities change.

  • Keep checkout and treasury activity together

The feature sits alongside Square payments and the Bitcoin tab in Dashboard. Converted bitcoin is held in a custodial Square wallet, with buy, sell, and withdrawal tools available where enabled.

  • Offer a Lightning payment option

Eligible sellers can accept Bitcoin Payments through the Lightning Network and choose settlement in bitcoin or automatically converted USD. Square says these payments settle in seconds in typical conditions.

  • Start on any listed Square plan

Square presents Bitcoin Conversions and Bitcoin Payments across Free, Plus, and Premium plans; Pro is custom-priced. The conversion rate is lower on Premium than on Free or Plus.

  • Keep a transaction record for tax work

Square says the mobile app and Dashboard can show taxable bitcoin transaction details and that it may provide Form 1099-DA. Tax treatment remains the business owner’s responsibility.

How it works for a U.S. operator

Open or use an active Square seller account in good standing, complete identity/KYB and any requested due-diligence checks, acknowledge the Bitcoin disclosures, and enable the feature in Dashboard. Square executes one bitcoin purchase per day using the selected percentage of eligible proceeds at the then-effective rate. The purchase is final; disabling the setting stops future conversions but does not undo completed ones.

Fees, plan cost, and settlement choices

At the verified date, Square lists a 1% Bitcoin Conversion fee on Free and Plus, and 0.50% on Premium; Pro pricing and processing terms are custom. Square lists Bitcoin Payments at 0% through 2026, with a flat 1% after that. Separately, Square lists bitcoin buy/sell at 1% plus a possible spread. Standard bitcoin withdrawal processing is free; Rush and Priority add fixed charges plus a pro-rata network fee.

Operational limits and risk controls

Bitcoin Payments use Lightning and are limited to transactions up to $600 according to Square’s product FAQ. Bitcoin payments cannot be disputed; refunds are issued to a Square gift card or eGift card rather than as bitcoin. Conversion and wallet transactions can be delayed by network or security review, may be suspended, and are exposed to bitcoin price movement. Bitcoin held through the service is not FDIC- or SIPC-protected.

Square Bitcoin is available on Square Free, Plus, Premium, and custom-priced Pro plans where the business passes eligibility checks. Bitcoin Conversions are percentage-based purchases from eligible sales; Bitcoin Payments are a separate Lightning checkout feature.

Requirements

  • Active Square seller account in good standing.
  • U.S. business location in a jurisdiction where Square Bitcoin is offered; Square specifically excludes New York.
  • Completion of Square KYB/customer due-diligence and identity verification, including two-step verification where requested.
  • Agreement to the Square Bitcoin Terms of Service and acknowledgment of the Square Bitcoin Disclosures.
  • For Bitcoin Conversions, eligible proceeds are Square card payments and Cash App Pay; cash, checks, Afterpay, gift cards, and deposits are excluded.
  • For Bitcoin Payments, customers need a Lightning-enabled bitcoin wallet and the payment amount must be within Square’s published $600 transaction limit.

Square says availability is for U.S. Square businesses except those based in New York, subject to standard verification and jurisdictional availability; it is not a promise of approval.

Bitcoin is volatile, is not legal tender or government-backed, and bitcoin balances are not FDIC- or SIPC-protected.

Completed Bitcoin Conversions are final and cannot be refunded, reversed, or converted back to USD within Square; Bitcoin Payments have no ordinary dispute process.

Bitcoin payment refunds are supported through Square gift cards or eGift cards, with the refunded amount based on the original USD value rather than the later bitcoin rate.

Square may impose identity, fraud, security, network, or regulatory reviews and may delay, limit, suspend, or discontinue access or transactions.

Square’s product page and terms state that rates, fees, withdrawal timing, and feature availability can change; confirm the in-account fee disclosure before purchase or withdrawal.

This record is product research, not tax, investment, legal, or accounting advice. A business should consult its tax adviser about bitcoin conversions, sales, and transfers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a business convert all of its daily Square sales into bitcoin?

No. Square’s product page says Bitcoin Conversions can be set to up to 50% of daily net card sales. Eligible sales include Square card payments and Cash App Pay, while cash, checks, Afterpay, gift cards, and deposits do not qualify.

Does Square Bitcoin require a paid Square plan or special bitcoin hardware?

Square presents the feature on Free, Plus, and Premium plans, with custom-priced Pro available for qualifying larger sellers. Square’s official Bitcoin page describes setup in Dashboard and Square Point of Sale apps and does not identify dedicated Bitcoin hardware, so no hardware is recommended for this record.

What should a business know before accepting Bitcoin Payments?

Bitcoin Payments use the Lightning Network, require a Lightning-enabled customer wallet, and are limited to transactions up to $600 according to Square’s FAQ. Payments are generally irreversible and cannot use the normal card chargeback process; Square says refunds are made to a Square gift card or eGift card.
