Healthcare

A clearer way for care teams to collect, track, and connect payments

Square gives U.S. healthcare practices a practical payments layer for front-desk checkouts, exam-room collections, phone payments, invoices, and pre-appointment balances. A clinic can use Square Point of Sale with PCI-compliant hardware, accept major cards plus eligible HSA and FSA cards, and give patients digital receipt options.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Square Virtual Terminal and Invoices extend collection beyond the visit, while the App Marketplace connects payment workflows with practice-management, EHR, intake, and billing tools. The important boundary is compliance: Square describes its healthcare stack as HIPAA-compatible, not universally HIPAA-compliant. Practices must use only identified HIPAA-enabled products or configurations and decide whether each workflow is appropriate for PHI.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Collect at the desk or beside the patient

Square Terminal accepts contactless, chip, and magstripe payments and includes receipt printing; Square’s healthcare guidance also describes using a portable device in an exam room or for home visits. Square Point of Sale provides the checkout and reporting layer.

  • Offer HSA and FSA card acceptance

Square says licensed healthcare providers can process HSA and FSA cards like other cards at the standard processing rate. Eligibility and the provider’s own card-acceptance obligations still need to be confirmed before launch.

  • Keep post-visit balances moving

Square Invoices can send patient charges by email or phone, track status, and automate reminders. Virtual Terminal supports computer-based payments, including remote collection workflows, while ACH through an invoice is available as a separate payment method.

  • Connect the payment step to practice software

Square’s U.S. healthcare pages point practices to App Marketplace connections for practice management, EHR, intake, and billing workflows. Listed examples include Reference Health Payments, DrChrono, Remedly, ClinicSense, Noterro, EZ Derm, and Mozart.MD.

  • Start without a hardware purchase

Square says hardware is optional: a practice can begin with invoicing, payment links, Virtual Terminal, or Tap to Pay on a compatible iPhone or Android phone. Hardware can be added when a clinic needs a dedicated front-desk or mobile checkout.

Built for the actual patient-payment journey

A practice can take a copay at check-in, bring a Terminal into an exam room when privacy or mobility matters, send a balance by invoice after the appointment, or use Virtual Terminal for a computer-based phone or remote payment. Square Dashboard provides reporting, and Square’s healthcare materials describe integrations for forms, scheduling, EHR, and billing. This is a payment and operations layer; it should not be presented as a replacement for a clinical record, claims, or full practice-management system.

HIPAA requires a deliberately scoped setup

Square’s HIPAA Business Associate Agreement applies only where Square acts as a Business Associate, including products or configurations explicitly identified as HIPAA-enabled. Not every Square Service is HIPAA-enabled, and buyer-facing services are outside the BAA. A covered entity or business associate must agree to the BAA, evaluate each workflow, protect PHI, and address encryption and permissions. The BAA does not make every connected app or every configuration compliant automatically.

Choose the plan around volume and workflow

Square Free has no monthly subscription cost and charges when a payment is taken. Square Plus and Square Premium are paid plans with 30-day trials and lower processing rates than Free; Square Pro is custom-priced for businesses processing over $250,000 per year and may include hardware discounts or implementation support. The exact subscription price and feature availability should be confirmed on the live U.S. pricing page before quoting a practice.

Square Free is the no-monthly-subscription starting point; Plus and Premium are paid plans with 30-day trials and lower processing rates; Pro is custom-priced for businesses processing over $250,000 per year. Healthcare landing-page pricing highlights the standard in-person rate, while the fee page gives plan-specific alternatives for other payment types.

Requirements

  • U.S. Square seller account and a supported internet-connected device or phone for the selected workflow.
  • Licensed healthcare providers should verify their eligibility and operational obligations for HSA/FSA card acceptance.
  • If the practice is a HIPAA covered entity or business associate, agree to Square’s HIPAA BAA and use only explicitly HIPAA-enabled products or configurations for PHI.
  • For integrations, the selected App Marketplace partner must support the practice’s EHR, intake, billing, or scheduling workflow; partner pricing and compliance terms are separate.

Square describes the healthcare offering as HIPAA-compatible, not universally HIPAA-compliant; not all Services or configurations are HIPAA-enabled.

Square Buyer Services are consumer-facing and outside the HIPAA BAA; their use does not create a Business Associate relationship with the practice.

Square is a payments and business-operations layer, not a promise of insurance claims processing, clinical records, or a complete EHR/practice-management replacement.

App Marketplace products are third-party partner solutions. Their availability, pricing, security, and HIPAA terms require separate verification.

Processing rates vary by Square plan and payment channel. Published rates and hardware prices can change; the values here are verified for 2026-10-27 and should be rechecked at checkout.

Square Terminal requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet with the appropriate hub; mobile readers require a compatible iOS or Android device.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a healthcare practice use Square for patient payments?

Yes. Square explicitly markets Point of Sale to U.S. healthcare practices, including clinics, dentists, optometrists, and dermatology centers, and supports in-person, remote, invoice, and integrated payment workflows.

Is Square HIPAA compliant for every healthcare workflow?

No. Square says it is HIPAA-compatible and provides a HIPAA BAA for scoped Services where it acts as a Business Associate. Not every product or configuration is HIPAA-enabled, so the practice must evaluate the workflow and protect PHI appropriately.

What is the lowest-cost way to start?

Square Free has no monthly subscription cost, and hardware is optional. A practice can start with an invoice, payment link, Virtual Terminal, or Tap to Pay on a compatible phone, then add a dedicated Terminal when front-desk or mobile checkout warrants it.
