Square Handheld

A roaming POS for orders, payments, and stock checks

Square Handheld puts a complete Square checkout in a staff member’s hand instead of tying every sale to a counter. Its built-in barcode scanner speeds product lookup and inventory work, while the camera can add item photos without a separate device.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Restaurants can take orders tableside, retailers can check out on the sales floor, and beauty teams can pair appointments with payment and client photos. It accepts tap and chip payments directly and can keep a supported checkout moving during a temporary outage. Plan for reliable Wi-Fi, however: the device needs internet for normal operation, and offline transactions carry a strict upload deadline and seller-side chargeback risk.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Take the sale to the customer

Use the portable touchscreen for tableside ordering, aisle checkout, curbside handoff, or service appointments rather than sending customers to a fixed counter.

  • Scan products and keep inventory current

The integrated scanner reads common 1D and 2D barcodes for checkout, item auto-creation, inventory workflows, gift cards, and other enabled features. The integrated 16 MP camera can capture item-library photos.

  • Accept the everyday in-person methods

The device accepts NFC contactless payments, EMV chip cards, and Cash App Pay QR codes through Square Point of Sale. Magstripe-only cards require a separate Square Reader for magstripe connected through the Handheld’s USB-C port.

  • Built for a working shift

Square describes an all-day battery, a 0.7 lb form factor, Gorilla Glass Victus cover glass, and IP54 protection against dust and water splashes. A protective case is optional and useful where drops are a realistic risk.

  • Keep selling through a short outage—with controls

Supported Square POS modes can accept eligible offline card payments on Handheld. The device must reconnect and upload within 72 hours; Square recommends 24 hours. Expired, declined, or disputed offline payments remain the seller’s responsibility.

What you need before opening the box

Create or use a Square account, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and complete the mandatory first software update. Wi-Fi is the natural choice for mobile work; Ethernet requires the separately sold Hub for Square Terminal. Square says captive-portal networks such as many public hotspots are not supported, and U.S.-intended hardware is approved for use in the United States rather than other countries.

Software and plan fit

Square Handheld includes access to Square’s free POS software, so a monthly subscription is not required for the basic device checkout workflow. Square Free is $0 per location per month. Square Plus is $49 per location per month and Premium is $149 per location per month; those plans can change processing rates and unlock additional features. Restaurant, retail, and appointments workflows have their own product capabilities and eligibility, so confirm the chosen app and plan before promising advanced functions.

Important operating limits

Handheld is not a substitute for a receipt printer or magstripe reader: network printers are separate, and magstripe requires a separate reader. Offline mode does not support Afterpay, Cash App Pay, Square Gift Cards, manually entered cards, Tap to Pay, or certain app modes; refunds wait until the offline payment uploads. Do not sign out, switch locations or modes, delete the POS app, or factory-reset while offline payments are pending.

U.S. Square Handheld is listed at $399, or $37 per month for 12 months under Square’s advertised credit-sale financing. The basic Square Free POS plan has no monthly subscription fee; Plus and Premium are optional paid plans per location.

Requirements

  • A Square account and login credentials are required; account owners create and set up accounts.
  • Wi-Fi with high-speed internet is required for normal operation; Square lists a recommended minimum of 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up.
  • Captive-portal networks are not supported. Ethernet requires the separately sold Hub for Square Terminal.
  • Magstripe-only acceptance requires a separate Square Reader for magstripe; network receipt printers and kitchen displays are also separate accessories.
  • Credit-sale financing is subject to credit approval; the advertised offer is not available to merchants in Alabama, Delaware, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire, or Tennessee, and taxes may be due at checkout.

The $399 hardware price and 2.6% + $0.15 in-person rate are Square’s U.S. published figures verified on 2026-10-27; Square may change pricing and plan features.

The advertised $37/month figure is financing, not a software subscription. Square states credit-sale plans are issued by Block, Inc., require credit approval, carry a 15% APR, and have purchase and state eligibility limits.

Offline payments are not risk-free. Handheld offline transactions must be uploaded within 72 hours, and Square says sellers remain responsible for expired, declined, or disputed payments.

IP54 means protection from dust and water splashes, not waterproofing or drop-proofing. The optional case is separate.

Square’s product page says a one-year limited warranty applies; warranty terms and accessory compatibility should be confirmed at purchase.

All plan, rate, financing, and feature statements are U.S.-specific and were checked against official Square U.S. pages only.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Square Handheld require a paid Square subscription?

No. Square says its free POS software is loaded and Square Free has no monthly subscription cost. Square Plus and Premium are optional per-location plans with additional features and different published processing rates.

Can Square Handheld keep taking payments when the internet drops?

Yes, when offline payments are enabled and the payment and POS mode are eligible. Handheld must reconnect and upload pending transactions within 72 hours, and unsupported types include Afterpay, Cash App Pay, gift cards, manually entered cards, and Tap to Pay.

Can it print receipts or accept magstripe cards by itself?

No. It can print through a compatible network printer, but the printer is separate. Magstripe-only cards require a separate Square Reader for magstripe connected through the Handheld’s USB-C port.
