Square Online Ordering

A direct ordering channel that keeps your menu, payments, and fulfillment connected

Square Online Ordering gives a U.S. food-and-beverage business a branded ordering profile that customers can open from a website, Google, social posts, Yelp, or a QR code. Orders flow into Square Point of Sale and can be routed to a kitchen printer or Square KDS, while pickup, curbside pickup, in-house delivery, or on-demand delivery can be configured by location.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

The profile is available with Square’s published Free, Plus, or Premium plans without an added monthly ordering-profile fee; online payment processing still applies. It is a strong fit for bakeries, coffee shops, food trucks, pizzerias, and quick-service operators that want more direct orders and less dependence on marketplace apps.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Own a direct ordering link

Create a branded, mobile-oriented ordering profile and share its link or QR code on your website, Google Business Profile, social channels, Yelp listing, or counter signage. Customers can browse menus, add notes, and pay without being sent to a marketplace app.

  • Keep menus and orders in one system

The ordering profile uses Square menus and menu items, supports menu hours and item-level fulfillment choices, and syncs online and in-person orders, customer data, and availability through Square Dashboard and Square POS.

  • Offer practical pickup and delivery

Configure in-store or curbside pickup, your own couriers, or on-demand delivery through Square’s delivery-provider options. Set delivery zones, fees, minimums, prep timing, fulfillment hours, and capacity rules by location.

  • Send tickets where the team works

Online orders can appear on Square POS and go to compatible kitchen printers or Square KDS. QR ordering can map codes to tables, walk-up windows, parking spots, or other pickup points and consolidate orders into a clearer kitchen ticket.

  • Build repeat business from first-party data

Customers can use discounts, promo codes, gift cards, loyalty, and supported digital wallets. Square also provides customer history and optional Google, marketing, and engagement connections for follow-up campaigns.

Plans, setup, and eligibility

The online ordering profile has no added monthly profile fee, but processing fees apply. Square’s U.S. pages say it launches with Square Free, Plus, or Premium, and the support article also lists Square for Restaurants Free, Plus, and Premium and Square Online Free, Plus, and Premium. A profile is only available to food-and-beverage sellers, requires a menu, and only the account owner can create it; team members need online permissions to adjust settings. Square Free sellers need advanced restaurant capabilities added, or must have full-service, quick-service, or bar mode enabled in Square Point of Sale. A physical address is needed for Google Business Profile syncing, so online-only businesses cannot sync a virtual location there.

Fees and delivery economics

Square’s U.S. published online card rates are 3.3% + $0.30 per transaction on Square Free and 2.9% + $0.30 on Square Plus or Premium. Orders through the direct profile do not carry a separate marketplace commission, but on-demand delivery adds a delivery-service-provider fee that may be charged to the customer or seller. The March 16, 2026 policy lists Uber at $4.20 + $0.75/km outside California and $4.50 + $0.95/km in California; DoorDash at $6.99 for up to 5 miles plus $1/mile up to 10 miles outside California and NYC, $8.99 in California, and $9.98 in New York City; Nash uses variable rates.

Hardware and compatibility boundaries

No hardware is required to launch the ordering profile. For a counter workflow, Square Terminal is an optional $299 device with a built-in receipt printer; Square’s compatible Receipt Printer is $319 and requires an Ethernet connection to the same network as the POS when used that way. Square KDS is Android-operated and costs $30 per month per device with Square Plus or $20 per month per device with Square Premium, plus the compatible Android hardware. Printer compatibility varies by device and connection, so confirm the exact model in Square’s U.S. compatibility matrix before buying.

Meaningful limitations to plan around

A location cannot offer both in-house and on-demand delivery at the same time, although it can switch between them. Alcohol delivery through Square’s local-delivery setup is limited to on-demand DoorDash, and on-demand delivery does not currently support age verification for tobacco products. Online ordering also depends on a correctly maintained Square menu, item availability, fulfillment hours, prep settings, tax and service-charge configuration, and a working POS or kitchen destination. The direct channel reduces marketplace commissions but does not remove Square processing fees or delivery-provider fees.

The online ordering profile is included with Square Free, Plus, or Premium with no added monthly ordering-profile fee. Online processing and any chosen delivery-provider charges still apply. Square Free, Plus, and Premium plan prices themselves were not exposed as fixed monthly figures in the verified page content, so monthlyUSD is left null.

Verified against official Square U.S. pages on October 27, 2026; fees and product availability can change.

Square’s up-to-30% marketplace-commission savings claim is an estimate based on an assumed 30% third-party commission on premium plans, not a guaranteed saving.

Delivery-provider fees are separate from Square processing and depend on provider, geography, distance, and delivery structure.

Hardware prices are optional U.S. prices observed on official Square pages: Square Terminal $299 and Receipt Printer $319 before taxes and fees.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Square Online Ordering require a monthly subscription?

The online ordering profile itself has no added monthly fee and can launch with Square Free, Plus, or Premium, but online processing fees apply. Higher plans can change processing rates and unlock additional Square capabilities.

Can a bakery or food truck use Square Online Ordering without buying Square hardware?

Yes. Square says hardware is not required, and the profile can be managed through Square Dashboard and connected to Square POS. A compatible printer, KDS, or payment device is optional and should be selected based on the operation’s ticket and counter workflow.

What is the biggest operational catch with delivery?

Each location must choose either in-house or on-demand delivery rather than offering both simultaneously. On-demand delivery also adds a separate provider fee, and alcohol and tobacco age-verification rules have specific limitations.
