Square Loyalty

Turn first-time buyers into regulars with rewards that run at checkout.

Square Loyalty gives a U.S. business a practical way to recognize repeat customers without bolting on a separate rewards register. Set points by visit, spend, item, or category; let customers join at checkout, through a Square website, or when paying an invoice; and make rewards redeemable in-store or online.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Promotions can add bonus points during slow hours, holidays, or featured-item pushes, while reporting connects loyalty activity to sales and customer spend. It is especially useful for a bakery, coffee shop, bottle shop, salon, or neighborhood retailer that wants a simple return-visit habit tied to its existing Square customer records.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Choose a reward rule that fits the business

Award points for visits, dollars spent, individual items, or categories. Spend-based programs can exclude selected items or categories, which helps protect margins on low-margin or excluded products.

  • Enroll customers where they already pay

Customers can join by entering a mobile number at the register, during an invoice payment, or during an online purchase. Points can accrue regardless of whether the customer pays by cash or another supported payment method.

  • Create promotions for real demand patterns

Use templates for slow hours, holidays, item spotlights, or category showcases, or build a scheduled promotion with a point multiplier or custom bonus points. This gives a café a way to fill a quiet afternoon or a retailer a way to spotlight a seasonal line.

  • Offer visible progress and flexible rewards

Set discount, free-item, combo, or other configured rewards, and optionally add points expiration. Customers can track status through their online buyer profile, digital loyalty pass, digital receipt, or Cash App; digital passes can be added to Apple Wallet.

  • Measure loyalty-attributed sales

Square surfaces loyalty-attributed sales, top loyalty customers, and average spend comparisons, and lets businesses review promotion performance in Dashboard. The connected Customer Directory gives staff a customer-level view at checkout.

Plans, setup, and operating limits

Square’s U.S. pricing page lists the loyalty rewards program in Square Plus and Square Premium, not Square Free. Plus is $49 per month per location and Premium is $149 per month per location; each offers a 30-day trial and Square says plans can be canceled or switched anytime. Square’s support documentation identifies Loyalty subscribers and Square Plus/Premium subscribers as eligible, and program creation happens in Square Dashboard. A program can have up to 15 rewards. Tier programs can have up to six tiers including the base tier, with rolling 12-month progress and one-year tier eligibility. These limits matter when designing a large multi-reward program.

Hardware and software compatibility

Loyalty is a Square software feature rather than a dedicated terminal, so no Loyalty-specific hardware purchase is required. It works through supported Square POS and Square Restaurants POS workflows; the broader U.S. compatibility page lists standalone Square Register, Square Terminal, and Square Handheld, plus Square Stand and Square Readers used with compatible iOS or Android devices. Square’s compatibility page states iOS 17.1+ or Android 7.0+ for several reader/stand combinations. Online enrollment and invoice enrollment can reduce the need for a front-counter device, but exact device support should be checked against the current compatibility tool before purchase.

Useful limitations to plan around

Creating the program is a Dashboard task and requires Loyalty permission for delegated staff. Rewards must meet the program rules before they appear for POS redemption, and a reward cannot be applied to more than one sale. Free-item or combo rewards must map to an item or category at each participating location to be redeemable there. Spend-based item exclusions are not available for visit-, item-, or category-based programs. Promotion minimum spend is additive to the program minimum spend, except that minimum spend does not apply to item- or category-based loyalty programs.

Square Loyalty is included in the U.S. Square Plus and Square Premium subscriptions. Square’s pricing page lists a 30-day free trial for Plus and Premium, and says plans can be canceled or switched anytime. Loyalty is not listed among Square Free features.

Requirements

  • A U.S. Square account with an eligible Square Loyalty subscription or Square Plus/Premium plan.
  • Program creation in Square Dashboard; delegated team members need Loyalty permission.
  • A supported Square POS, Square Online, or Square Invoices workflow for the desired enrollment and redemption path.
  • A customer identifier such as a mobile number or customer profile so points and rewards can be associated with the buyer.
  • For free-item or combo rewards across locations, the selected item or category must exist in each participating location’s Item Library.

Verified against official Square U.S. pages on 2026-10-27; plan pricing and included features are subject to Square change.

Square’s product page cites customer outcome statistics based on global 2022 data; those figures are not treated here as a forecast for an individual business.

The listed $49 monthly figure is the published Square Plus per-location subscription that includes Loyalty, not a standalone Loyalty-only price.

Normal payment-processing, messaging, and any other applicable Square fees remain separate from the loyalty subscription.

Compatibility varies by device and operating-system version; confirm the current U.S. compatibility tool before buying hardware.
