Square Kiosk — new 21.5-inch AI self-service kiosk

A voice-enabled self-ordering station for busy counter-service restaurants

Square Kiosk is a purpose-built, 21.5-inch self-service station for U.S. restaurants that want guests to browse, ask menu questions, customize orders, and pay without waiting at the counter. Its built-in microphones support voice and touch ordering, while the large vertical display, presence detection, integrated tap-and-dip payments, and barcode scanner keep the experience in one device.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Menu, pricing, modifiers, inventory availability, loyalty, and orders stay connected to Square. It is a stronger fit for a high-volume quick-service line than for a general retail checkout: the device requires Square Plus or Premium, a live POS device, reliable internet, indoor placement, and English-language operation.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Voice or touch ordering

Guests can speak a complete order, ask what an item contains, filter the menu, or switch to touch at any point. Three directional microphones and noise filtering are designed for busy restaurant settings, although Square cautions that extreme noise environments may be better served by touch.

  • Contextual menu suggestions

The kiosk can use location sales data, time of day, popular items, and cart pairings to suggest relevant additions. This is an upsell aid, not a guaranteed sales result; outcomes vary by business.

  • Integrated customer payments and loyalty

Tap, dip, and PIN payments are built in, so a separate card reader is not required. Guests can check in, earn, and redeem rewards through Square Loyalty, and the built-in scanner supports Square Gift Card processing.

  • Connected restaurant operations

Menu, price, modifier, and availability changes made in Square can flow to the kiosk, while kiosk orders appear alongside counter and online sales. KDS and kitchen or receipt printers are supported through Square POS hardware today.

  • Flexible installation

Choose a countertop mount, floor stand, wall mount, or compatible third-party 100 x 100 mm VESA mount. The kiosk connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet and includes presence detection that wakes the display as a guest approaches.

Product details

Built for a quick-service rush

This is most compelling where customers already expect counter-service speed: a quick-service restaurant can let guests build complex orders, see modifiers clearly, and pay at the station while employees focus on preparation and hospitality. Square's launch materials specifically position the product for QSR operators and multi-unit restaurant operations; the evidence does not establish equivalent support for non-food businesses.

What the installation needs

Plan for a power outlet, stable Wi-Fi or Ethernet, indoor placement, and enough space for the chosen mount. Square requires at least one active device running the Square Point of Sale app. Multiple kiosks should be at least 24 inches apart edge-to-edge to reduce audio interference, and accessibility performance is intended when the device's top edge is mounted no higher than 58 inches.

Important compatibility boundaries

Square Kiosk is a standalone device with built-in Square Kiosk software; it does not need an iPad. It does not support offline payments or cash payments, and it must remain plugged in. There is no built-in printer. KDS, kitchen printers, and receipt printers currently require connection to Square POS hardware; direct receipt-printer connection is described as coming soon. The device is currently U.S.-only and English-only, and it is not outdoor-rated.

Base kiosk pricing is $1,999 with the countertop stand, plus $99 per device per month for Square Kiosk software. The software requires an active Square Plus or Premium subscription. Other mount configurations change the hardware price.

Requirements

  • At least one active point-of-sale device using the Square Point of Sale app.
  • Stable Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and a continuously connected power source.
  • Choose and obtain the required countertop, floor, wall, or compatible third-party VESA mount; pricing varies by mount.
  • Legacy Restaurants POS Plus or Premium subscribers must switch to a current Square plan to use the new Square Kiosk.
  • Credit-sale installment option is advertised at $97 per month over 24 months for the countertop-stand configuration, subject to credit approval, 15% APR, state availability, purchase amount limits, and applicable sales tax.

The $1,999 hardware figure is the countertop-stand configuration. Official specifications also list $2,149 with floor stand, $1,949 with wall mount, and $1,899 for kiosk-only hardware that requires an added mount.

Square Kiosk software is $99 per device per month and requires Square Plus or Premium; Square's pricing page presents this as kiosk software pricing, while the launch announcement states Plus is $49 per location per month and Premium is $149 per location per month.

Processing figures are published U.S. in-person tap/dip rates and do not describe every possible payment method or custom contract. Square says custom rates may be available for businesses processing more than $250,000 annually.

Voice ordering, menu answers, and recommendations depend on an accurately configured Square menu and data. Square does not guarantee increased sales or a particular labor outcome.

The device is currently available in the U.S. and English only. It is indoor-only, not outdoor-rated, has no offline mode, does not accept cash, and must stay plugged in.

Gift-card scanning is supported; packaged-goods item checkout by barcode is listed as coming soon.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Square Kiosk need an iPad or a separate card reader?

No. The new Square Kiosk is standalone, includes its own vertical touchscreen and Square Kiosk software, and has built-in contactless and chip payments. It is different from Square Kiosk Lite, which uses an iPad and Square Stand.

What Square plan is required?

Purchase and use require an active Square Plus or Square Premium subscription, with advanced restaurant capabilities added. Sellers on legacy Restaurants POS Plus or Premium plans must switch to a current Square plan. The kiosk software itself is $99 per device per month.

Can the kiosk work without internet, outdoors, or with cash?

No. Square says stable internet is required for payments and voice ordering, and the specifications say offline payments and offline mode are unsupported. Cash payments are not supported, the kiosk is not outdoor-rated, and it must remain connected to power.
