Square Email Marketing

Turn Square checkout data into timely customer emails

Square Email Marketing gives a bakery, café, shop, salon, or other local business a practical way to bring customers back without exporting sales data to a separate email platform. It runs from Square Dashboard, uses Customer Directory data for audiences, and supports customizable one-time emails as well as recurring automations.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

A bakery can welcome first-time buyers, a clothing shop can spotlight a new collection to regular shoppers, and a salon can send birthday or lapsed-client offers. The trade-off is important: email marketing is not a standalone free add-on. It is included with Square Plus or Square Premium, and campaigns depend on eligible customer information and marketing permissions.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Use sales-aware audiences

Square can build smart groups from purchase activity, including new, regular, lapsed, frequent, and top-spending customers. That lets a coffee shop promote a new roast to regulars instead of sending every offer to every contact.

  • Create branded campaigns quickly

Choose a template or default layout, then adjust colors, fonts, buttons, headers, text, images, and Square catalog items. The built-in AI writing tool can suggest alternate copy, but Square says the seller should review and edit it before sending.

  • Automate useful follow-up

Set up welcome messages, birthday offers, abandoned-cart reminders, lapsed-customer reactivation, or recurring weekly and monthly campaigns. Recurring campaigns cannot use seasonal themes, so holiday promotions still need a separate schedule.

  • Connect offers to Square sales

Campaign reports show opens, clicks, purchases attributed to campaigns, and coupon redemption. For a pizzeria or clothing store, that makes it easier to compare a targeted offer with the sales it brought back in person or online.

  • Grow the list with Square tools

Businesses can collect names and emails through checkout sign-up, a hosted sign-up page, an embedded form, digital-receipt flows, or Customer Directory. Existing contacts can be bulk imported in Dashboard, subject to Square's marketing and unsubscribe rules.

Plans, access, and workflow

Square Email Marketing is included with Square Plus and Square Premium, with unlimited email campaign sends. Campaign creation and reports are handled in Square Dashboard by the account owner or a team member granted the relevant marketing permissions; reporting also requires reports permission. A business must have customer information in Customer Directory before it can send. Square's current U.S. pricing page lists Plus at $49 per month and Premium at $149 per month, with plan charges calculated per active location. Both plans advertise a 30-day free trial on the pricing page, but the account's final eligibility and billing display should be confirmed before purchase.

Compatibility and meaningful limits

The email add-on is a Dashboard/POS workflow rather than a hardware product. Square's U.S. collection guide says it is available on Square POS and Square for Retail POS, but not on Square Register at this time. Customer sign-up can be enabled on the POS checkout screen, or collected through Square-hosted and embedded web forms. Customers can unsubscribe globally or by business, and Square says a bulk import cannot re-subscribe people who previously unsubscribed. One-time reminder emails are off by default; once sent, a reminder cannot be disabled. Coupon campaigns may be resent to non-openers seven days before expiry, while the default coupon expiry is two months after sending unless changed.

Fees and payment context

The email feature itself is covered by the Plus or Premium subscription; Square does not publish a separate per-email fee on the reviewed U.S. product page. If a campaign drives a purchase, the normal payment-processing rate still applies to that transaction. Current U.S. plan rates list Plus at 2.5% + $0.15 for tap, dip, or swipe and 2.9% + $0.30 for online or invoice payments; Premium lists 2.4% + $0.15 in person and 2.9% + $0.30 online or by invoice. Those are payment fees, not email-send fees.

Email Marketing is included in Square Plus or Square Premium. Current U.S. pricing lists Plus at $49/month and Premium at $149/month, priced per active location; a 30-day trial is advertised on the pricing page. No separate email-send fee is published on the reviewed product page.

Square Plus and Premium are per-active-location subscriptions; hardware is sold separately.

Square does not publish a separate email-send fee on the reviewed U.S. product page; payment-processing fees apply only when a recipient completes a Square payment.

Customer consent, unsubscribe handling, and applicable email-marketing laws remain the business's responsibility; Square provides opt-out controls and eligibility rules but is not a substitute for legal advice.

AI-generated campaign copy is supplied by a third-party partner and should be reviewed and edited before sending.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Square Email Marketing on the free Square plan?

Not according to Square's U.S. marketing pages. Email Marketing requires Square Plus or Square Premium. Those plans include unlimited email campaign sends; Square Free does not list the feature.

Does Square Email Marketing work with Square Register?

Square's U.S. email-collection guide says the email marketing add-on is available on Square POS and Square for Retail POS, but is not available on Square Register at this time. Campaigns themselves are created and reviewed in Square Dashboard.

Can I send an email to an imported customer list?

Square supports bulk importing customers into Customer Directory from Dashboard, but its documentation says the import tool cannot subscribe people who previously unsubscribed to email marketing. Use only contacts for whom your business has a valid marketing basis and honor their preferences.
