Square Contracts

Clear service terms, signatures, and payment expectations in one Square workflow

Square Contracts gives U.S. service businesses a practical way to turn a quote or booking into a documented agreement. From Square Dashboard, you can start with service, sale-of-goods, completion-of-service, delivery, or credit-card-authorization templates, reuse clauses, collect electronic signatures, and attach the signed contract to an invoice, estimate, transaction, or appointment.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

That fits a contractor, cleaner, landscaper, caterer, or other professional service provider that needs customers to approve scope, deposits, cancellation terms, warranties, or payment milestones before work starts. The Contracts feature itself has no subscription fee, but payments attached to the workflow can incur Square processing fees, and higher-tier features have plan requirements.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Reusable agreements for real jobs

Start from Square's standard templates or build custom templates and a clause library for recurring work. This is useful for documenting scope, delivery, completion, card authorization, deposits, refunds, and warranty language without rebuilding every agreement.

  • Electronic signing with a record

Send a contract for electronic initials and signature. After completion, Square emails a PDF copy to the customer and recipient, and the business can resend a copy from Square Dashboard.

  • Connect terms to money owed

Attach contracts to Square Invoices, Estimates, transactions, or appointments. A contract can spell out payment terms and a deposit/final-payment schedule, helping a project business connect approval evidence with its billing record.

  • Appointment forms that go out automatically

Eligible Square Appointments and Square Plus/Premium sellers can send digital forms—Square's term for appointment-linked Contracts—by email or text when a booking is made, with options for specific services or customers who have not signed before.

  • No separate Contracts subscription

Square advertises Contracts as free to create and send, with no monthly fee for the feature. Businesses still need an active Square account, and any payment accepted through Square remains subject to the applicable processing rate.

What the workflow looks like

Create or reuse a template in Square Dashboard, add clauses and business details, add a signature, and share it. You can send independently generated copies to as many as 20 recipients at once, but Square says bulk sending is not for a multi-party negotiation in which several people must complete the same document. Contracts can be created and edited in Dashboard; the Square Invoices and Square Point of Sale apps can attach an existing contract to an invoice or estimate rather than create and edit the contract there.

Plans and eligibility

The U.S. help documentation lists Square Free, Plus, and Premium subscribers, Square Appointments and Square Invoices subscribers, and sellers using services mode in Square Point of Sale as eligible for the Contracts workflow, subject to account permissions. Custom contract fields require Square Plus, Square Premium, Square Appointments Premium, or Square Invoices Plus. Requiring a contract signature before invoice payment is available with Square Plus, Square Premium, or Square Invoices Plus. Automated appointment forms require Appointments Plus/Premium or Square Plus/Premium with advanced bookings capabilities enabled.

Important limitations for business owners

Square does not review a seller's language for legal sufficiency, does not promise enforceability in any jurisdiction, and is not providing legal advice. Square says its current templates do not cover partnership agreements, rental contracts, leases, subleases, NDAs, or employment contracts. Automated appointment forms are not compatible with classes; SMS appointment notifications show a maximum of four form links. When sending to multiple recipients, payment information cannot be customized per recipient, and an invoice or estimate cannot be added to that bulk-send flow.

Square Contracts creation and sending are advertised at $0 with no separate monthly subscription. Square account plan pricing and payment processing are separate; advanced contract fields, signature-before-payment, and automated appointment forms require specified paid tiers or capabilities.

Requirements

  • An active U.S. Square account and access to Square Dashboard are required.
  • The user must have Contracts permissions; team permissions are managed in Square Dashboard.
  • Square Free, Plus, or Premium can use the core Contracts workflow; Appointments and Invoices subscribers can also use it subject to the documented feature conditions.
  • A hardware purchase is not required to create or send Contracts; Dashboard is the primary creation and editing surface.
  • Paid-plan capabilities apply for custom contract fields, signature-before-payment, and automated appointment-linked digital forms as documented by Square.

Square is not a law firm or attorney, does not review seller-provided terms for legal accuracy or sufficiency, and does not guarantee enforceability; consult a licensed attorney for business-specific language.

The free $0 Contracts feature does not make payment processing free. Rates depend on payment method and Square plan and can change; verify the official U.S. fees page before publication.

Bulk sending creates separate contracts for recipients and is not a shared multi-signer negotiation flow; it is limited to up to 20 recipients at a time.

The official page's dispute-win statistic is a Square marketing claim and should not be treated as a guaranteed outcome.

Square's AI clause-generation option is powered by a third-party partner and carries applicable license/use restrictions; review generated language before use.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Square Contracts free in the U.S.?

Square says you can create and send Contracts free of charge with no monthly Contracts subscription. If the customer pays through an attached Square invoice or another Square payment flow, the applicable processing fee still applies.

Can I require a customer to sign before paying an invoice?

Yes, but Square documents that the setting requires Square Plus, Square Premium, or Square Invoices Plus. The setting appears after a contract is attached to the invoice.

Can Square Contracts replace a lawyer's contract?

No. Square supplies templates and signing tools but says it does not provide legal advice, does not review your terms, and cannot guarantee that a document is suitable or enforceable. Have a licensed attorney review terms where the legal risk warrants it.
