Square Subscriptions

Turn repeat orders and memberships into predictable revenue

Square Subscriptions helps a bakery schedule recurring pastry boxes, a fitness studio collect repeating membership dues, a nonprofit accept regular gifts, or a professional service firm automate retainers from one Square Dashboard. Build plans around catalog items, choose weekly through annual billing, offer an optional trial or discount, and share enrollment through a checkout link, QR code, social post, or Square Online button.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Customers can manage payment details, pause or resume when enabled, and cancel from their confirmation link. There is no separate monthly Subscriptions fee, but each renewal still uses the payment method’s applicable Square processing rate. Check fulfillment and entitlement limits before promising pickup, item swaps, or class credits.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Recurring plans without a separate software fee

Create and manage subscription plans in Square Dashboard at no monthly Subscriptions cost. Use an optional free trial, a finite cycle count, or an ongoing plan to match the offer you actually sell.

  • Billing cadences that fit the offer

Set recurring weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual frequency options. Plans can include discounts, a start date, pause controls, and a defined end after a number of billing cycles.

  • Enrollment wherever customers already engage

Publish a subscription through a checkout link, QR code, email, SMS, social media, or an embedded Square Online button. This gives a local business a practical way to put a recurring pastry box, service plan, or donation offer on a counter sign or website.

  • Catalog, order, and customer visibility

Item subscriptions use the Square item library, keep stock updated as orders are fulfilled, apply item-level sales-tax settings, and surface subscription orders in Square Order Manager. A customer confirmation includes a Manage subscription link for payment updates and permitted pause, resume, or cancellation actions.

  • No dedicated card reader required

Subscriptions are administered in Square Dashboard and can be sold online, so a seller can start with a Square account, catalog, and customer payment method rather than buying a terminal. Hardware remains useful for in-person sales, but it is not a Subscriptions prerequisite.

How a recurring offer works

Create a plan, attach catalog items, choose frequency and start/end behavior, then share the enrollment route. For an existing customer, Square Dashboard can use a saved payment method or send an invoice. Online item subscriptions can be sold through Square Online, and fulfilled subscription orders appear alongside other orders in Order Manager.

Important operating boundaries

Square’s current item-subscription workflow does not support pickup as a subscription-plan fulfillment option, custom billing dates such as billing every subscriber on the first of the month, changing a plan price after creation, swapping an item on an active subscription, or minimum commitment periods. A non-physical membership also does not get an entitlement counter, so Square will not automatically track how many classes or visits a member has redeemed. Existing plans may be labeled Legacy and remain POS-manageable. Subscription plans and subscriptions cannot currently be managed from Android devices, including Square Terminal, Square Register, and Square Handheld.

Payment authorization and fee discipline

Recurring charges depend on the payment method and the seller’s Square plan. Card-on-file use requires customer authorization; Square says sellers should keep the signed authorization securely for PCI-DSS, privacy, and dispute protection. Current U.S. published rates include 3.5% + 15¢ for manual entry or card on file on Free, Plus, and Premium, while online or invoice payments are 3.3% + 30¢ on Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus or Premium. ACH via invoice is 1% with a $1 minimum, with a $10 cap on Plus/Premium; deposits to Square Checking may have $0 ACH fees under the listed conditions.

Square Subscriptions has no separate monthly software fee. Total cost depends on the payment route, the seller’s Square plan, and any applicable payment-method or international-card charges. Square Plus and Premium are separate paid Square plans and are not required solely to use the core no-monthly-cost Subscriptions capability, though the current support article separately identifies Plus/Premium and Square Online Plus/Premium subscribers for item-subscription features.

Fees & eligibility

  • Manual entry or card on file

Published U.S. rate for Square Free, Plus, and Premium; recurring charges using a saved card can fall in this category. Verify the rate shown for the account’s plan in Dashboard.

  • Online or invoice payment

Published U.S. card-not-present rates; the exact recurring checkout route determines the applicable category.

    3.3% + $0.30 on Square Free; 2.9% + $0.30 on Square Plus or Premium
  • ACH bank transfer via invoice

Requirements

  • A U.S. Square account with an item library and access to Square Dashboard; account-owner or team-member permissions are needed to create and manage plans.
  • A catalog item for current item-subscription plans, or an existing legacy plan where applicable.
  • A customer payment method or permission to send an invoice; card-on-file storage requires customer authorization and secure records.
  • Internet-connected access to Square Dashboard; subscription management is currently unavailable on Android devices, including Square Terminal, Square Register, and Square Handheld.
  • Square Online Plus/Premium or Square Plus/Premium may be relevant for specific item-subscription workflows identified by Square’s support documentation; confirm the account’s feature eligibility in Dashboard.

This record reflects official Square U.S. pages reviewed on 2026-10-27; plan pricing, feature gates, and processing rates can change.

Do not describe subscriptions as a substitute for membership entitlement tracking: Square explicitly says non-physical subscriptions do not count redeemed classes or visits.

Do not promise subscription pickup, post-creation price changes, active-subscription item swaps, custom monthly billing-date batching, or minimum commitment periods; the current support article lists these as unavailable.

Card-on-file recurring billing requires customer authorization. Preserve the signed authorization securely and follow applicable PCI-DSS, privacy, and payment rules.

Processing rates are per transaction and depend on payment type and Square plan; they are not a single universal Square Subscriptions fee.

Square’s payment-fee pages state that rates may vary by plan and that account-specific rates should be checked in Square Dashboard.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Square Subscriptions have a monthly software fee?

Square says there are no monthly fees or fixed costs for Square Subscriptions. You still pay the applicable Square processing fee when a renewal is paid, and a separate Square Plus or Premium plan may apply to other features or account configurations.

Can customers pause, resume, update payment details, or cancel?

Yes, when the seller enables pause controls, customers can use the Manage subscription link in their confirmation to update payment information, pause or resume, or cancel. Sellers can also manage these actions from Square Dashboard; Android device management is not currently supported.

Is Square Subscriptions suitable for a class-membership business?

It can automate recurring dues, but it does not provide entitlement tracking for non-physical memberships. Square specifically says it will not track how many included classes a gym member has redeemed, so a business needing visit credits should verify another Square workflow or an approved integration before selling that promise.
