Square Kiosk Lite — iPad app for Square Stand

Turn an iPad-and-Stand checkout into a self-ordering lane

Square Kiosk Lite is the lighter, iPad-based self-ordering option for a quick-service counter that already uses Square. It puts your menu, modifiers, upsells, loyalty prompts, and payment flow on a diner-facing iPad mounted in Square Stand, while menu changes and sales activity continue to flow through Square Dashboard.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Guests can browse, customize, and pay without waiting for a cashier, which makes the setup especially practical for a busy quick-service restaurant with a defined pickup line. Budget for both the required Square Plus or Premium plan and a per-active-device Kiosk Lite charge; the iPad and Square Stand are separate purchases.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Move guests through the rush

Diners can build and pay for their own orders, helping a quick-service counter shorten the cashier queue and keep staff focused on preparation and handoff.

  • Capture modifiers and add-ons at checkout

The diner-facing flow supports item customization and prompts for upgrades or add-ons before payment, so common special requests reach the kitchen without a verbal relay.

  • Keep the menu and reporting connected

Menu updates, including items marked unavailable, can be reflected across the kiosk while sales remain visible in Square’s reporting workflow.

  • Offer self-service loyalty enrollment

With Square Loyalty active, eligible guests can enroll, earn points, and redeem qualifying rewards during the kiosk checkout flow.

  • Add kiosks as demand grows

Each active kiosk is managed from Square Dashboard and is billed as its own device, allowing a location to add a second or third ordering point when the line warrants it.

Product details

What you need to run it

Square Kiosk Lite requires an active Square Plus or Square Premium subscription, a compatible iPad, and Square Stand. Square’s compatibility page specifies iPadOS/iOS 17.1 or later for Square Stand. The current USB-C Stand specification lists iPad (A16), iPad (10th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st–4th generation), iPad Air (4th and 5th generation), and iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and M3) as compatible. The iPad and Stand are not included in the Kiosk Lite software fee.

Hardware fit and an important limitation

Square Stand includes the integrated contactless and chip payment reader, a USB hub, power components, and countertop or wall mounting hardware; a floor mount is separate. In Kiosk Lite mode, however, Square says Stand cannot connect directly to external accessories over Bluetooth, USB, or Ethernet. The Stand pairs with primary Square POS or Square for Restaurants hardware instead. It has no built-in printer, so do not assume a receipt printer, barcode scanner, scale, or kitchen accessory can be attached directly to the kiosk.

Payments and operational caveats

Customers can tap or dip cards at the Stand reader; magnetic-stripe cards require a separate Square Reader for magstripe. Square lists offline payments for Stand, but transactions must reconnect and upload within the applicable offline window, and the merchant remains responsible for expired, declined, or disputed offline payments. Square’s standard in-person processing rates apply; Kiosk Lite is not a substitute for the underlying payments account or plan.

Kiosk Lite is an additional per-active-device software charge on top of a required Square Plus or Square Premium subscription. The official product page lists $50/month per device with Square Plus and $30/month per device with Square Premium, with a free first 30 days for new customers. Square Stand and a compatible iPad are sold separately.

Requirements

  • Square Plus or Square Premium subscription.
  • A compatible iPad running iOS/iPadOS 17.1 or later for Square Stand.
  • Square Stand; the current USB-C model is the documented Stand pairing for this workflow.
  • Internet connectivity for normal operation and synchronization; offline payments have a limited reconnection window.
  • Each active Kiosk Lite device is billed separately.
  • A Square POS or Square for Restaurants primary device is used for the Stand pairing and back-of-house workflow.

Square Kiosk Lite is not the purpose-built Square Kiosk with a 21.5-inch display; it is an iPad app used with Square Stand.

The software fee does not include the iPad or Square Stand.

Kiosk Lite mode disables direct Bluetooth, USB, and Ethernet accessory connections on the Stand; accessory compatibility shown for ordinary Square POS does not automatically apply in kiosk mode.

Square Stand has no built-in printer, and magnetic-stripe payments need a separate Square Reader for magstripe.

Processing rates and subscription prices are official U.S. published rates checked on 2026-10-27 and can change; custom rates may be available for businesses processing more than $250,000 annually.

The free 30-day access described by Square is for new customers’ Square Plus or Premium trial; the product page states cost thereafter and says the initial charge may be prorated.

No claim is made here about Square’s eligibility, underwriting, tax treatment, or a merchant’s ability to obtain a particular plan beyond Square’s published requirements.
